Did you know research shows that students who read at least 20 minutes daily have a clear literacy advantage over kids who read less or don’t read at all? The Library’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) stops the summer learning slide and strengthens kids’ literacy advantage. Library staff are hard at work planning this year’s program, which will be in an all-digital format. For the second year, participants will track their reading using the Beanstack app. If you are unfamiliar with Beanstack, we invite you to try it out now by joining our Safer at Home Reading Challenge, happening through the end of May.
Every year approximately 50 youth volunteers help the Library carry out the SRP. Teens looking to complete volunteer hours this summer may now fill out the teen volunteer program online application.
The 2020 SRP will feature digital storytimes and engaging craft programs that can be done from home, and staff are working with our beloved Wonderful Wednesday performers to transition from in-person entertainment to live-streamed content. While we have revamped our program to keep everyone safe, our focus remains the same: to celebrate the joy of reading for all ages. We can’t wait to launch our first-ever virtual Summer Reading Program!
