Vaccine

Today, LA County Department of Health Services (DHS) embarked on a massive COVID-19 vaccination effort that will result in 6,000 vaccinations for frontline healthcare workers at our acute care hospitals by Christmas.

This historic effort began early this morning at three LA County Health Services hospitals: LAC+USC Medical Center, Olive View-UCLA Medical Center, and Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Hundreds of health care workers have already received their shots and just today, DHS will reach 1,500 people with a potentially lifesaving vaccine.

The Department of Health Services expects another shipment of vaccinations to arrive in the coming days, which will allow us to vaccinate another 4,000 of our frontline healthcare workers. That additional shipment will bring the total to more than 10,000 vaccinations by the end of this year.

As a reminder to everyone, while these vaccinations provide hope it should not be taken by the public as a reason to not wear your mask or stay home as much as possible. It is still critical that we do what we know works to limit the spread of COVID. This will help our healthcare system as we brace for impact while this surge continues on.

The L.A. County Department of Public Health issued an updated Health Officer Isolation Order. According to this updated order, you must stay home and isolate yourself from others until you are no longer at risk for spreading COVID-19. Until this time, you may not leave your place of isolation or enter any other public or private place, except to receive necessary medical care. You are required to self-isolate because you can easily spread COVID-19 to others including people who are at higher risk for serious illness, such as older adults and people with underlying medical conditions.

If you have a positive test, and have not done so already, consider contacting your healthcare provider, clinician advice-line or telemedicine provider for a medical assessment. While you are isolating, you are required to follow the Home Isolation Instructions for People with COVID-19 Infection outlined below:

  • Stay away from household members.
  •  Do not go to work, school, or public areas.
  • If you must leave home to get essential medical care, drive yourself, if possible. If you cannot drive yourself, keep as much distance as possible between you and the driver and others (e.g. sit in the back seat), leave the windows down, and wear a mask, if possible. If you do not have a mask, wear a cloth face covering.
  • If someone from outside your household is shopping for you, ask them to leave the food and other supplies at your door, if possible. Pick them up after the person has left. If you need help finding free delivery services, social services, essential items like food and medicines call 2-1-1 or visit the Public Health resource webpage.

Cases are increasing

Our daily case numbers are unlike any we have ever seen in our County and reflect extraordinarily high rates of community transmission; activities we were able to do just a few weeks back, now present far too much risk for virus transmission.

In order for us to stop the surge, L.A. County residents will need to use the tools at hand to slow community transmission and reduce the number of infected people. The strategies that work remain the same:

  • No gatherings/events with others outside of your immediate household;
  • Always and correctly wear face coverings/masks when around others, and;
  • Always maintain your physical distance from others who are not from your household

During this surge, everyone should also stay at home except to provide or receive essential services, avoid all non-essential travel, get tested if you have symptoms or an exposure, and isolate immediately from your family and others if you have symptoms or test positive for COVID-19. If we take these actions, we will save lives.

CA Notify Stop the spread

In this time of alarming rises in cases and hospitalizations, it is more important than ever that all Californians do their part to stop the surge. Californians can opt-in to CA Notify to receive COVID-19 notifications informing them if they have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for the virus.

CA notify will alert users if they have been in close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19. With that information, they can make responsible decisions around quarantine and testing, which is essential for stopping the surge.

The technology is available through the Google Play store on Android devices or through iOS settings on Apple devices. For more information about CA Notify, visit canotify.ca.gov

With the cancellation of the live Rose Parade on January 1, the South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee is already gearing up for the 2022 New Year’s Day event by encouraging public support, starting Saturday, December 26, at 10 a.m. and continuing through Sunday, December 29, at 10 p.m.

South Pasadena Tournament of Roses Committee (SPTOR) President Brant Dunlap is urging those in the community and beyond to get behind a new look Crunch Time Party, minus the traditional dinner, silent and live auction held at the War Memorial Building in town. This year’s virtual auction will feature dozens of items, including a gourmet dinner for eight, a private airplane ride for two, a Big Bear getaway, an overnight stay at a high-end hotel, an elegant estate tour, dinners, gift baskets, entertainment and much more.

While this year’s Crunch Time Party will look different, Dunlap knows the goal of the auction remains the same – to raise the necessary funds for the city float to participate in the 2022 Rose Parade and create enormous hometown pride along the way.
