Price Gouging 2

Living in LA County means you might one day suffer damage from fires, floods, earthquakes, or other disasters – such as the current COVID-19 health pandemic. Occasionally, people use these times of emergency to try to make an extra profit. When businesses raise their prices too much during (and after) an emergency, it may be considered price gouging – a crime in California.

LA County’s Department of Consumer & Business Affairs (DCBA) wants to help protect you and others from unscrupulous price gougers. If you believe you are a victim of price gouging, contact DCBA over the phone at 1-800-593-8222 or online at stoppricegouging.dcba.lacounty.gov/#/homepage.

To learn about additional DCBA resources, visit DCBA online at dcba.lacounty.gov

LA County’s Board of Supervisors passed a motion, last week, to prevent foreclosures in the County by connecting struggling homeowners with foreclosure prevention counseling and mortgage assistance.

The adopted motion calls for an expansion of LA County’s existing Foreclosure Prevention Program and establishes a Mortgage Financial Relief Program that will be available through LA County’s Department of Consumer & Business Affairs (DCBA), once developed.

The motion includes the following funding allocations:

  • $1.5 million to assist homeowners facing foreclosure by connecting them with foreclosure prevention counselors who can assist with loan modifications, forbearance, and work with their lenders to keep them in their homes.
  • $4 million allocated to creating a Mortgage Financial Relief Program which will provide deferred and forgivable loans to homeowners to help stabilize their mortgage with their loan servicer. The program will be targeted to assist areas of the County which have experienced high levels of foreclosures.

The Library is pleased to partner with Glendale Library, Arts & Culture to make their new Be the Change Series of virtual author talks available to South Pasadena residents. On Thursday, September 24 at 6:30 p.m. the Series presents author Eric Nusbaum in conversation with Los Angeles Times columnist and author Gustavo Arellano. Nusbaums’s book, Stealing Home: Los Angeles, the Dodgers, and the Lives Caught in Between, is a story about baseball, family, the American Dream, and the fight to turn Los Angeles into a big league city, a confrontation that upended Mexican American communities, captivated the nation, and whose outcome still echoes through Los Angeles today. The event is free but registration is required.

This program is brought to you by Glendale Library, Arts & Culture and the Southern California Library Cooperative, with funding provided by the City of Glendale Arts and Culture Commission and support from Niche Academy and Outlook Newspapers. The Be The Change Series focuses on Inclusion–Diversity–Equity–Antiracism and seeks to build collective understanding of systemic racism, elevate the voices and stories of Black, Indigenous and People of Color, and inspire our community to be the change.

Digital Divide Funding

Earlier this week, LA County’s Board of Supervisors approved funding to address the digital divide in LA County. This, to ensure all students have the tools they need for distance learning during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The funding allocation of $12.8 million in federal coronavirus relief funds was requested by the Los Angeles County Office of Education (LACOE) and will make it possible to purchase computer devices and internet connectivity for students in need. To date, LACOE has secured 15,000 computer devices, but needs to secure an additional 27,000 devices and 21,000 hotspots for students to use at home.

Learn more about this decision by reading LACOE’s announcement.
