The Clean Power Alliance is the electricity provider for South Pasadena and Southern California Edison (SCE) continues to be responsible for transmission and delivery of electricity, sending customer bills, and maintaining the electric grid infrastructure in the city.

Resources for Customers Impacted by COVID-19

Clean Power Alliance customers have access to new protections in coordination with SCE to assist those experiencing economic hardship due to COVID-19.  Customers who have recently lost their job or are financially impacted by COVID-19 can access bill payment assistance, flexible payment plans, and easily sign up for reduced rates through the CARE/FERA programs. SCE is also suspending service disconnections for nonpayment. Customers can contact SCE at 800-655-4555, or visit www.sce.com/safety/coronavirus, to take advantage of these resources.

SCE Information on Planned Power Outages

SCE is continuing to perform work to make urgent repairs, maintain their network, and perform wildfire mitigation, which may include planned outages. In order to stay informed on the latest information regarding planned and unplanned power outages, visit the SCE website (https://www.sce.com/outage-center/check-outage-status) to sign up for outage alerts via email, text or voicemail. To report a power outage contact the SCE outage center via this website link or by phone 800-611-1911.  Staff is in regular communication with SCE regarding upcoming work in the Community and continues to pressure them to defer planned outages or perform mitigation (such as providing generators) to minimize the impacts to the community.

Please add your considered responses to the Governor’s survey, which seeks public input on how California’s phased return to business as usual can be safely and successfully implemented.

  • California is building a roadmap for modifying the statewide Stay-at-Home order while maintaining community health and resiliency.
California Resilience Roadmap Stages

Blue graphic that reads

Stage 1: Safety and preparedness. This is where we are now. Continue to build out testing, contact tracing, PPE, and hospital surge capacity. Making essential workforce environments as safe as possible. Prepare sector-by-sector safety guidelines for expanded workforce.

Stage 2: Lower Risk Workplaces. Gradually opening some lower risk workplaces with adaptations. Retail (e.g. curbside pickup), manufacturing, offices (when telework is not possible), more public spaces.

Stage 3: Higher Risk Workplaces. Open higher risk environments with adaptations and limits on size of gatherings. Personal care (hair and nail salons, gyms), entertainment venues (movie theaters, sports without live audiences), in-person religious services (churches, weddings).

Stage 4: End of Stay-At-Home Order. Re-open highest risk environments and venues once therapeutics have been developed. Concerts, convention centers, live audience sports.

  • The Governor is seeking feedback on physical and environmental adaptations that can make workplaces safer and protect our communities.

City of South Pasadena is excited to present yet another major milestone in the project development of the Monterey Road and Orange Grove Traffic Signal. Last week, EC Construction installed the traffic signal poles and assembled the mast arms at the intersection. This week, the contractor began wiring the signal, placing the pull boxes and setting up the controller cabinet. As the construction progresses, the intersection is nearly a month away from being fully operational to provide a safe and efficient travel of drivers, pedestrians and bicyclists.

Did you know research shows that students who read at least 20 minutes daily have a clear literacy advantage over kids who read less or don’t read at all? The Library’s Summer Reading Program (SRP) stops the summer learning slide and strengthens kids’ literacy advantage. Library staff are hard at work planning this year’s program, which will be in an all-digital format. For the second year, participants will track their reading using the Beanstack app. If you are unfamiliar with Beanstack, we invite you to try it out now by joining our Safer at Home Reading Challenge, happening through the end of May.

Every year approximately 50 youth volunteers help the Library carry out the SRP. Teens looking to complete volunteer hours this summer may now fill out the teen volunteer program online application.

The 2020 SRP will feature digital storytimes and engaging craft programs that can be done from home, and staff are working with our beloved Wonderful Wednesday performers to transition from in-person entertainment to live-streamed content. While we have revamped our program to keep everyone safe, our focus remains the same: to celebrate the joy of reading for all ages. We can’t wait to launch our first-ever virtual Summer Reading Program!

The South Pasadena Senior Citizens Commission is made up a five fabulous residents that are volunteering their time to make phone calls to our seniors during the COVID – 19 pandemic. Each Commissioner calls 80 seniors per week. The Commissioners are providing an additional link to our seniors by informing them of essential services being offered by the center and volunteers. Most of our seniors have friends and family to ensure their needs are met, but not all.

For many, this phone call is their connection and comfort knowing they are being checked on. Our seniors are eager to come back to the center as it is their main source of socialization. Commissioner Julie Papadakis added “I’ve learned how resilient and appreciative the seniors are and they know that staff and the community care about them”.

Commissioners will continue making calls until the Center re-opens.  Any senior citizens resident interested in being called can contact the Senior Center office at (626)403-7360 Monday through Friday 8 am to 2 pm.

The South Pasadena Public Library has launched a digital puzzle collection on Jigsaw Planet. Our first collection features 11 postcards from the Cawston Ostrich Farm, which was in business on the 100 block of Pasadena Avenue in South Pasadena between 1886 and 1935. Puzzle difficulty can be adjusted for all ages by selecting the number of pieces to play with. In its heyday, the farm was a premier tourist attraction that shipped its good all over the world. Today the site is number 18 on the City’s list of designated historical landmarks (for an interactive map of the City’s landmarks click here). The Library’s Cawston Ostrich Farm Collection includes a scrap book filled with newspaper clippings, an unpublished history of the farm, maps, physical objects, and promotional items created by the business. Check the Library’s Jigsaw Planet page often for new puzzles created from the historic images in the Library’s collection.
