The Oaklawn Bridge and Waiting Station between Fair Oaks Avenue and Oaklawn Avenue remains temporarily closed, and access is currently restricted. This closure was implemented out of an abundance of caution, after some cracking along the bridge walls was observed. At this time, our staff think it is prudent to review the structural integrity of the bridge and to see what options are available to address the observed cracking.
Public Works has engaged one of their on-call professional service technical advisors, and a structural engineer is scheduled to perform an initial site visit. After this initial review, Public Works will discuss the observations with their vendor, and establish the level of assessment needed for the bridge. Once work is completed, our team will be able to provide more information on the state of the bridge and any recommended improvements and costs for City Council consideration.
As a related effort, staff will begin the assessment of the historic Waiting Station to evaluate the costs to repair the damaged roof, and restore the other elements of the structure. We apologize for the inconvenience and will keep the community updated with more information as it becomes available.

Join South Pasadena Beautiful at the annual Garden Tour on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 1-4pm at the South Pasadena Arroyo Woodland and Wildlife Nature Park. Visit the recently planted Demonstration Garden, a native plant garden installed by volunteers from Friends of the South Pasadena Nature Park. This event will also feature several participants such as Girl Scout Troup 2131, South Pasadena Community Garden, and City of South Pasadena’s Sustainability Division. LA County will also be hosting a Smart Gardening Workshop to educate the community on gardening and composting. Discounted compost bins will be available for purchase after the workshop.

The Los Angeles County Assessor’s Office would like to share a resource to property owners who experienced damage or destruction resulting from recent harsh weather conditions. The Misfortune and Calamity (M&C) program is available for property owners to file a claim within one year of an incident. By filing an M&C claim within one year of an incident, properties that have sustained a minimum of $10,000 in damage or have been destroyed may be eligible for a refund of taxes already paid and lower annual tax bills until the property is repaired or rebuilt.

To help deter catalytic converter thefts, the South Pasadena Police Department will etch your vehicle’s VIN onto the catalytic converter. This is a FREE event and is open only to South Pasadena residents. Registration is required as space is limited.

If you experience discolored water, or air in the water that makes the water look white or “milky”, please flush it out using a hose bib. The Water Division is responding to a water main break on the 600 block of Brent Ave. Water service interruption will affect the 600 and 700 block of Brent Ave as staff works diligently to complete repairs to restore water service. Traffic flow on the 600 block of Brent Ave. will also be affected due to the narrow street. We will continue to post updates as our team works on resolving the issue.
