South Pasadena News and Updates

South Pasadena children and teens are encouraged to use their imagination and design a one-of-a-kind bookmark that is inspired by the 2022 Summer Reading Program theme “Read Beyond the Beaten Path”, or that celebrates books, reading and libraries. Designs will be entered in the annual Bookmark Contest and winners’ bookmarks will be printed and distributed during the Summer Reading Program. Contest forms are available on the library’s website at www.southpasadenaca.gov/children or from the Children’s Room. Bookmark Contest entries must be submitted by Wednesday, March 1, 2022, to the Children’s Services desk at the South Pasadena Public Library, located at 1100 Oxley Street.

Please see the recent updates to the COVID-19 Health Officer Order Requirement – FAQ: What Nightclubs, Lounges, Bars, Breweries, Wineries and Distilleries Need to Know (updated 1/20/22). See changes highlighted in yellow. This FAQ applies to nightclubs, lounges, bars, breweries, wineries, and distilleries that are not licensed as full-service restaurants.

  • 1/20/2022: As soon as practicable, but no later than January 17, 2022, employees who work in

an indoor setting where they are in close contact with other employees or customers must be

provided with and required to wear a well-fitting medical grade mask, surgical mask, or higher-

level respirator, such as an N95 face filtering respirator or KN95, at all times while indoors at the

worksite or facility. The full cost of purchasing an appropriate face mask must be borne entirely

by the employer and not the employee.

Have you noticed an increase in your SoCalGas bills? Typically, the winter months see a higher demand in gas usage and therefore a relative increase, however, the cost of gas has now increased significantly beyond seasonal variations.  The procurement rate has doubled from last year – it is now about $0.84 per therm, up from about $0.40 per therm in January 2021.  As a note, SoCalGas doesn’t produce the gas, they purchase and distribute – so this ‘commodity’ cost is basically passed through to the customer based on the market cost of gas.  The company does try to mitigate cost increases by storing gas and then drawing on this supply when the prices goes up seasonally.  There has also been a few other smaller increases on top of the procurement cost to maintain gas infrastructure and comply with new environmental regulations.

The City of South Pasadena Senior Center, in partnership with the South Pasadena Chinese‐American Club, will host a drive‐by lunch event in celebration of the Lunar New Year on Thursday, February 3, 2022, from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.


Adults ages 55 and over can sign up to receive a free lunch. Advanced registration is required as space is limited. Participants will be assigned a time slot to drive by the front of the Senior Center, located at 1102 Oxley St., to receive their meal. The deadline to register is Monday, January 31, 2022.
