Travel during omicron: Things to protect from COVID

Travel is likely to increase during the holiday break. The best protection is to be fully vaccinated before traveling. Encourage staff and families to stay local until everyone in their household is fully vaccinated. If they do choose to travel with unvaccinated family members, they should follow the LACDPH Travel Advisory and Guidance

WHO says omicron Covid variant has spread to 38 countries

You have most likely heard a lot in the news lately regarding the newly emerging COVID-19 Omicron Variant. Please see the California Department of Public Health’s (CDPH) COVID-19 Fact Sheet Omicron Variant, dated November 28, 2021, and Los Angeles County Public Health’s (Public Health) December 2, 2021 press release on the first local case of the Omicron Variant in LA County.

Here are steps LA County is taking:

  • “Earlier this week, LA County health care providers received an advisory from Public Health detailing information on assessing risk and directions for submitting samples for sequencing.
  • Residents can also get daily updates on Omicron by clicking on the banner on our home page.
  • Our lab is coordinating with the State CDPH lab for the identification of Omicron with specimen testing, continuing to rely on the network of commercial and public health labs to ensure that we are receiving a representative assessment of the prevalent variants in LA County.
  • With 1.7 million students and staff back at schools this week after the Thanksgiving break, we are working with all school districts to reinforce the importance of existing school-based public health requirements and routine testing programs.
  • We also have teams realigning plans for protecting those most vulnerable, including those living and working at skilled nursing facilities, jails, and shelters.
  • In partnership with LAX, the state, and CDC, we are standing up a rapid testing site at the international terminal to provide information and offer rapid testing to international travelers. We will be messaging the need for international travelers to comply with the federal quarantine and testing guidance.”

As of today, Omicron is now present in 35 countries, with three cases detected in the United States, one in San Francisco County, one in Minnesota and another in Colorado. There are no cases in Los Angeles County as of now.

While we are still learning about transmissibility, the severity of cases, risk of infection, and vaccine effectiveness, it is still important to follow recommended safety measures and protect those around us by continuing to wear face masks and getting vaccinated.

As we head into the winter holidays, we know it makes sense for us to be more cautious and given the emergence of a new variant concern, taking sensible steps to limit our risk of being exposed or transmitting is prudent. The City will continue to keep our community updated on this new variant and encourage everyone to follow recommended safety measures.

On December 9th and 16th, 2021, Southern California Edison (SCE) will perform nighttime construction work to replace a transmission pole at Grevelia Street and Stratford Avenue. The work will require a full street closure of Grevelia Street and Clark Place from Park Avenue to Garfield Avenue and will be performed from 9pm to 6am.

On August 18, 2021, the City Council authorized SCE to perform nighttime construction work to replace the following four (4) transmission poles.

  • Pole 28699E – construction completed
  • Pole 28700E – work scheduled for 12/9/21
  • Pole 1963577 and 4494469E – work scheduled for 12/16/21

SCE will distribute the flyers to the residents notifying them of the construction activity and will post signs and message boards within the vicinity of the work for additional noticing. SCE does not anticipate any power outages as a result of the work. This maintenance work is to ensure the continuity of a safe, reliable electrical system which serves the City of South Pasadena. Upon the completion of the project, the overall reliability of the SCE grid system will improve, which will minimize future power outages.
