South Pasadena News and Updates

In response to forecasted excessive heat, the City of South Pasadena will host two Cooling Centers Wednesday, August 31 through Wednesday, September 7, 2022 at the South Pasadena Senior Center, located at 1102 Oxley Street and the South Pasadena Public Library, located at 1100 Oxley Street.

Residents are invited to sit and enjoy the air conditioning during normal business hours. The South Pasadena Senior Center is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The South Pasadena Public Library is open Monday through Thursday from 10:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m., Friday through Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and Sunday from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. For more information on cooling centers within Los Angeles County, please visit www.ready.lacounty.gov/heat.

Did you know that South Pasadena commercial establishments qualify for Metropolitan Water District rebates? Many cities provide rebates to make it easy to reduce water usage. The City of South Pasadena is in partnership with Metropolitan Water District (MWD) to provide rebates for indoor and outdoor water conservation projects. Water conservation can be done by changing appliances, renovating your landscape, or changing habits. When determining what the best rebates are for you, choose the items that will be useful to your establishment and apply at your earliest convenience. These rebates are available on a first-come, first-served basis! Be sure to follow the directions posted in order to receive your selected rebate, some rebates require pre-approval. Apply for rebates in the City of South Pasadena and through Metropolitan Water District’s SoCalWaterSmart website.

The Clean Power Alliance (CPA) will begin providing the entire City with renewable energy starting in October 2022! Businesses and commercial establishments will aid in the efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our City. Don’t worry- it’s not complicated! Commercial businesses are automatically enrolled in the program. You will still receive a bill from Southern California Edison, the source of the power is just changing from non-renewable fossil fuels to clean energy! The CPA also provides customer assistance programs that can help manage your electricity bill: visit CleanPowerAlliance.org/CPAbillhelp Residences and municipal facilities have been utilizing renewable energy through the CPA since 2019! In addition to the Design and Review Board Special Meeting on Thursday, September 1 at 5:30 p.m., there will be a Regular Meeting at 6:30 p.m.

The Regular Design Review Board meeting on September 1 at 6:30 p.m. will consider a new commercial building at 5 Pasadena Avenue and exterior façade remodel project for Bristol Farms at 606 Fair Oaks Avenue.

Join us at a hybrid in-person/virtual Special Design Review Board Meeting on September 1 at 5:30 p.m. to discuss Objective Design Standards project for multi-family and mixed-use developments. The goal is to create an objective design standards through measurable requirements, simple tables, and diagrams. This project will complement the City’s current efforts to update the General Plan, Housing Element, and Downtown Specific Plan.

The Library will be closed on Wednesday, September 7, 2022 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. so that Library staff may participate in a strategic planning session with the consultants leading the Library’s five-year strategic planning process. Staff engagement is critical to the development of a robust and actionable strategic plan. The strategic plan is expected to be completed by the end of October, after going through a total of four phases, which include analysis, engagement, goal setting, and visioning.

Members of the public are encouraged to attend a Library strategic planning community open house, to be held in the Library Community Room on Tuesday, September 6, from 6:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. The Library’s strategic planning consultants will share results from the recent survey, which was completed by more than 400 people, and will seek further input about community needs and the vision for the Library’s future. During this engaging session, attendees will have opportunities to provide feedback through discussion, comment cards, and vision boards.

Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts and Los Angeles County Public Works are hosting a Household Hazardous Waste and Electronic Waste Program in Alhambra on Saturday, August 27 from 9am to 3pm. LA County residents have a legal and cost-free way of disposing their unwanted household chemicals that cannot be disposed of in conventional trash bins. 

This event will be taking place at the Los Angeles County Public Works Headquarters: 900 South Fremont Avenue, Alhambra, CA 91803.
