South Pasadena News and Updates

Booster Shots are now Available

Los Angeles County is now administering Pfizer booster third doses after the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Director Rochelle P. Walensky endorsed the CDC Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices’ recommendation for a booster dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine in several population groups. The CDC also recommended a booster dose for those in high risk occupational and institutional settings.

Boosters are currently only available to residents who received Pfizer. Residents who received Moderna and Johnson & Johnson will need to wait until the FDA reviews the data about boosters and determines the need for and safety of boosters for these vaccines.

Eligible Los Angeles County residents for a booster dose of Pfizer include those who received the second of the two-dose Pfizer vaccine series at least 6 months ago and are either:

  • 65 years or older
  • Residents of long-term care facilities
  • 18 to 64 years with underlying medical conditions
  • 18 to 64 years with high institutional or occupational risk, including healthcare workers, first responders, teachers and day care staff, grocery workers, and workers in homeless shelters or prisons

Residents can make an appointment for their booster by using the MyTurn system or by making an appointment at a pharmacy or clinic that offers Pfizer vaccinations.

Residents will need to bring proof that they have received two previous Pfizer doses, which for most people will be in the form of the white vaccination card, or a photo of the white card, or a digital record of your two doses. At many sites, residents may be asked to sign an attestation form indicating they meet the criteria to receive the booster.

If you need a ride to get your vaccination, you can reach out to the Public Health call center at 1-833-540-0473 and you will be connected to free transportation.

Starting September 27, 2021, Southern California Gas Company will be working on Monterey Road from Oak Hill Avenue to Pasadena Avenue to upgrade the natural gas facilities. To ensure the public safety, the utility company will maintain the construction zone with necessary warning signs and temporary traffic control devices. The Southern California Gas Company has notified the residents impacted by the construction activity. Should the construction activity interrupt the gas services, the utility company will coordinate with the residents to perform necessary appliance safety checks before restoring the services. The construction activity will be performed during the permitted hours listed in the City’s Municipal Code: Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., and Sunday and City recognized holidays before 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The work will improve the reliability of the infrastructure and minimize the risks of gas leaks in the future. Any questions or concerns about the upcoming construction work may be directed to Southern California Gas Company at (800) 427-2200

The South Pasadena Police Department is committed to keeping the traveling public safe. On September 25th, the South Pasadena Police Department will hold a DUI and Driver License Checkpoint from 6 p.m. to 2 a.m. at an undisclosed location within the city, looking for drivers suspected of driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

Checkpoint locations are chosen based on a history of DUI crashes and arrests. The primary purpose of checkpoints is not to make arrests, but to promote public safety by deterring drivers from driving impaired.

During the checkpoint, officers will look for signs that drivers are under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.

The South Pasadena Police Department reminds the public that impaired driving is not just from alcohol. Some prescription medications or over-the-counter drugs may interfere with driving. Always follow directions for use and read warning labels about driving or “operating heavy machinery,” which includes driving a car. While medicinal and recreational marijuana are legal, driving under the influence of marijuana is illegal.

If you plan on drinking or taking medications that may impact your ability to drive safely, plan on staying at home.

Drivers charged with a first-time DUI face an average of $13,500 in fines and penalties, as well as a suspended license.

This program’s funding is provided by a California Office of Traffic Safety grant through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The Health Officer Order has been modified to align with President Biden’s national strategy, including some targeted vaccine requirements to ensure we continue to lower transmission rates and protect each other.

The HOO update includes requirements for all attendees at indoor mega events- events with 1,000 or more attendees indoors and include, conventions, conferences, expos, concerts, shows, nightclubs, sporting events, live entertainment, and festivals- to show proof of full vaccination or a negative test result prior to entry. Self-attestation can no longer be used to verify an attendee’s status as fully vaccinated or as proof of a negative COVID-19 test result.

Acceptable proof of vaccination status includes a photo identification with any one of the following:

  • CDC COVID-19 vaccination record card (white card)
  • World Health Organization (WHO) vaccine record card (yellow card)
  • California Department of Public Health (CDPH) COVID-19 digital vaccination record
  • Other COVID-19 digital vaccination record issued by an approved company
  • Documentation of vaccination from the healthcare provider or entity that provided the COVID-19 vaccines
  • California Immunization Registry (CAIR2) vaccination record

The vaccination proof should include the person’s name, type of COVID-19 vaccine, and the date of the doses administered. The person can show the vaccination card, a photo of the card as a separate document, or a photo of the card stored on a phone or electronic device.

Acceptable proof of a negative test includes a photo identification with testing results that must include the person’s name, type of COVID-19 viral test performed, and negative test result. The date when the COVID-19 test was taken must be within the 72 hours prior to the event. The test results can be a printed copy or on a phone, including an email or text message results from the test provider or laboratory.
